A statutory public service is a service that receives funding from the government. It is an
organisation that is required by law, for example, The Police Service, The NHS and The Armed Forces.
A non – statutory public service is a service that will rely on charities and donations for funding. They
are not funded by the Government and they are not required by law. Examples of non – statutory
organisations include The NSPCC, Victim Support and Church Groups.
The Police Service.
The main role of the police service is to maintain law and order within their local areas through
protection of the public and their property. The police help to reduce and prevent crime and
improve life for all citizens.
The Police is an essential service which is authorised by the Government to uphold the law, protect
the lives of the general population and prevent crime and civil disorder.
