Grade 8 Life Science: The Comprehensive "A+" Master Summary

Section 1: The Building Blocks of Life (Cytology)

Cell biology is the foundation of all Life Science. You must understand not just what the parts
are, but how they work together as a system.

The Two Major Cell Types

Prokaryotic Cells: Simple, small, and old. They lack a nucleus and membrane-bound
organelles.
Example: Bacteria and Archaea.

Eukaryotic Cells: Large and complex. They have a defined nucleus and specialized
organelles.
Example: Animals, Plants, Fungi, and Protists.

Organelle Deep-Dive (The "Machinery")

1. Cell Membrane (Plasma Membrane): A "phospholipid bilayer" that is semi-permeable.
It uses Passive Transport (no energy) and Active Transport (uses ATP) to move
materials.
2. The Nucleus: The control center. It contains Chromatin (uncoiled DNA) which
condenses into Chromosomes during cell division. The Nucleolus inside makes
ribosomes.
3. Ribosomes: The protein "factories" found floating in the cytoplasm or attached to the
Rough ER.
4. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER):
a. Rough ER: Studded with ribosomes; modifies and transports proteins.
b. Smooth ER: No ribosomes; makes lipids (fats) and detoxifies the cell.

5. Golgi Apparatus: The "Post Office." It receives proteins from the ER, packages them
into Vesicles, and tags them for their final destination.
6. Lysosomes: The "Garbage Disposal." Filled with enzymes to break down waste and
old cell parts.
7. Mitochondria: The "Powerhouse." This is where Cellular Respiration happens (Glucose
+ Oxygen \rightarrow ATP + CO_2 + Water). It has its own DNA.

Plant-Specific Structures include:
1. Cell Wall: Made of Cellulose. It provides structural support (animals use skeletons;
plants use cell walls).

, 2

2. Chloroplasts: Contain Chlorophyll. This is the site of Photosynthesis (Sunlight + CO_2
+ Water \rightarrow Glucose + Oxygen).
3. Large Central Vacuole: A massive storage tank for water. When full, it creates Turgor
Pressure, which keeps the plant from wilting.

> ⭐ Fun Fact: Mitochondria were likely once independent bacteria that were "eaten" by a
larger cell billions of years ago and decided to stay. This is called the Endosymbiotic Theory

Section 2: Genetics, DNA, and Heredity

This is the "Instruction Manual" section. It explains how you became you.
