What is Coal & Petroleum
Formation of Fossil Fuels
Types of coal
Products of petroleum
Natural gas & petrochemicals
Conservation of resources
Introduction
(i) Coal
Coal is a fossil fuel.
It is formed from dead plants buried millions of years ago.
It is black and hard in nature.
It is mainly use as a fuel (for cooking, industries, electricity).
It is a non- renewable resource.
(ii) Petroleum
Petroleum is also a fossil fuel.
It is formed from dead marine organisms (plants & animals in sea).
It is a liquid fuel found deep under the earth.
It is called “crude oil” before refining.
It is used to make petrol, diesel, kerosene, LPG, plastic etc.
It is also a non-renewable resource.
Natural resources
Natural resources are things obtained from nature.
They are not made by humans.
Examples: air, water, soil, minerals, forests.
They are useful for living and survival.
Two types: renewable and non-renewable.
Renewable resources
Renewable resources are resources that can be replaced naturally.
They are not exhausted easily.
They are available again and again.
Examples: sunlight, wind, water, forests.
They are environment-friendly.
Non-renewable resources
Non-renewable resources are resources that cannot be replaced quickly.
They take millions of years to form.
They can be exhausted if overused.
Examples: coal, petroleum, natural gas.
They are limited in quantity.
Coal
Coal is a fossil fuel.
It is formed from dead plants over millions of years.
It is black, hard, and combustible.
