, TOPIC 1
CHEMICAL REACTIONS
Learning Objectives
Students will learn how to relate the substances taking part in the chemical
reaction and substances formed.
Students will learn to predict the characteristics of chemical reactions.
Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to classify chemical substances into reactants and
products.
Students will be able to identify the characteristics of chemical reactions based
on their observations.
Real Life Application
Many of you may have Banana as their favorite fruit. One to two bananas per day is
considered a moderate intake for most healthy people. But it is advised not to keep
banana in open for a long time as it will turn brown when left on a counter for a
while.
Have you thought why it is so? It is because of the chemical reaction taking place
inside this fruit. Banana contains an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase and some
iron containing chemicals which when exposed to oxygen causes a chemical
reaction. This is known as oxidation which turns the fruit color into brown.
This can be prevented or slowed down by adding an acid or antioxidant such as
lemon juice which can reduce the pH on the fruit’s surface and slows the chemical
reaction.
To get a better idea, let us study about the chemical reactions in detail.
We come across a variety of changes which take place around us in our daily life.
These changes may be physical changes or chemical changes.
