Page 1 – Introduction
Laboratory values are an essential part of patient care and nursing practice. Nurses must
understand normal laboratory ranges in order to recognize when a patient’s condition is
improving or worsening. In the NCLEX exam, questions often test a nurse’s ability to identify
abnormal lab values and determine the correct nursing action.
This cheat sheet is designed to help nursing students quickly remember the most important
laboratory values commonly tested on the NCLEX. Instead of memorizing hundreds of
numbers, this guide focuses on the key values that appear most frequently in clinical
settings.
Understanding lab values helps nurses:
• Detect medical problems early
• Monitor treatment effectiveness
• Prevent complications
• Provide safe patient care
For example, if a patient’s potassium level becomes dangerously high, the nurse must act
quickly because it can affect the heart. Similarly, abnormal glucose levels can indicate
diabetes or hypoglycemia, which require immediate intervention.
This book presents laboratory values in a clear and simple format so that students can easily
review them before exams or during clinical practice.
, By the end of this guide, you will be able to quickly recognize normal ranges and understand
what abnormal values may indicate.
Page 2 – Complete Blood Count (CBC)
A Complete Blood Count (CBC) is one of the most common laboratory tests. It measures
different components of the blood and helps diagnose conditions such as infection, anemia,
and immune disorders.
White Blood Cells (WBC)
Normal Range: 4,000 – 11,000 cells/mm³
Function:
White blood cells help the body fight infection.
High WBC may indicate: • Infection
• Inflammation
• Stress
• Leukemia
Low WBC may indicate: • Bone marrow disorders
• Viral infections
• Chemotherapy effects
Red Blood Cells (RBC)
Normal Range:
Men: 4.7 – 6.1 million cells/mm³
Women: 4.2 – 5.4 million cells/mm³
Function:
Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body.
Low RBC may indicate: • Anemia
• Blood loss
• Nutritional deficiencies
High RBC may indicate: • Dehydration
• Lung disease
• Polycythemia
