Panama Disease (Fusarium Wilt) in
Banana
1. Introduction:
● Panama disease is a soil-borne fungal disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp.
cubense.
● It is one of the most destructive diseases in the history of agriculture.
2. Symptoms:
● Yellowing of Leaves: Older leaves turn yellow first, starting from the margins.
● Pseudostem Splitting: The base of the banana plant may show vertical cracks.
● Vascular Discoloration: If you cut the stem, you can see reddish-brown lines inside.
● Wilting: Eventually, the entire plant collapses and dies.
3. Disease Spread:
● Through infected soil and running water.
● Using infected suckers (planting materials).
● Contaminated farm tools and boots.
4. Prevention and Management:
● Use disease-free planting materials (Tissue culture plants).
● Quarantine measures to prevent soil movement.
● Disinfecting farm tools with bleach or alcohol.
● Developing resistant banana varieties.
