PROJECT QUESTION
How does the poem "Tithonus" reflect Victorian
attitudes toward aging and immortality while
showcasing classical allusions and literary techniques
that highlight philosophical questions about existence
and Time?
2.
, INTRODUCTION
Explanation of the questions that have been framed -
The question discusses how the people during the Victorian Period had a perception towards
immortality through this poem which also shows classical allusions and various literary
techniques which marks the philosophy of Time and existence itself.
Reason for choosing this text -
I chose the poem "Tithonus" because of the unique themes such as immortality, aging, and
the passage of time. The way the poet talks intricately about the bittersweet nature of eternal
life resonates deeply with me and the readers, the poet also captures the longing and sorrow,
a curse that accompanies such a gift.
Tithonus's eternal love for Eos symbolizes the complexity of relationships over time. It
reminds us that love can be both a source of joy and a painful reminder of our limitations as
humans. This sense of duality adds a beautiful depth to the poem and relates to the struggles
we face in maintaining connections as life progresses.
Moreover, the poem feels particularly relevant today, as we have our own desires for eternal
youth and the denial of mortality. . This encourages a deeper understanding of how we
perceive our existence and the choices we make. This poem makes us contemplate on the
complexities of life, love, and the human condition. On a personal level, "Tithonus" reminds
me of my own reflections on life and the passage of time, making it a meaningful choice for
me.
Brief explanation of how i intend to interpret the text -
In "Tithonus," I would interpret this text with the explanation of the historic, cultural
background and the literary aspect of this poem and the author, and then the relevance of
the poem and the poet here.
