What I Would Do
The situation puts me at a crossroads because Sam is so nice to me, yet he is bully and
acts unprofessionally towards Alex. His behavior and attitude has always been wanting, but it
has escalated now that we are a group of three. We are required to deliver on a project and even
though Alex has performed beyond expectations, Sam still bully’s him, even though he is the one
who is behind the schedule and is dragging us behind. Hence, I would have to do something to
ensure that Sam stops harassing Alex and seek to promote positive engagement that will enhance
our group’s coherence and performance. In this regard, I would talk to Sam about the importance
of practicing professional and personal ethics and etiquette in the workplace and how it promotes
conducive workplace environment that allows everyone to thrive. I would specifically emphasize
adopting civility in the workplace that makes a person behave respectfully towards others.
Civility requires you to follow the golden mean rule where you treat others as you like them to
treat you (Upshur & Bernstein, 2014). I would ask him how he’d if Alex treated him the way he
treats him. Thus, I would encourage him to treat Alex with civility and dignity to minimize
conflicts, negative energy, and promote a friendly workplace environment. I would highlight that
his attitude and behavior towards Alex was creating a toxic environment that would negatively
affect our group’s performance. In addition, I would commend him for being nice to me and
others and encourage him to replicate that behavior towards Alex. However, I would ask him
whether there is anything personal between the two that drives the behavior. The situation would
not change my attitudes towards Sam and adopting professional ethics and etiquette would only
make the group stronger because everyone will feel respected. I have encountered countless
bullying incidences at school and workplace but I always stand up to bully early before the
behavior escalates.
