Three Components of Value-Based Care
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) (2015) defines
three components of value-based care: safe, effective, and patient-centered. The
advanced practice nurse understands the American Nurses Association (ANA) provides
standards for delivering safe patient care through Provision 3 in the Code of Ethics
(2015). Provision 3 of the Code of Ethics calls for the advanced practice nurse to
“promote, advocate for, and protect the… safety of the patient” (ANA, 2015, p. v)—
further, Provision 3.4 ensures nurses adhere to policies and procedures to promote
patient safety, recognizing and reporting errors and near misses, and implementing
process improvements to reduce waste and unnecessary procedures. Practicing
process improvements to reduce waste and unnecessary procedures ensures the
advanced practice nurse delivers effective, patient-centered patient care. The AHRQ
defines effective patient care as providing care based on evidence-based practice
(2015). The advanced practice nurse recognizes through continuous quality
improvement (CQI) and process improvement refinement strategies, focusing on the
patient as an autonomous individual, recognizing the uniqueness of each patient’s need
and values, allows for safe, effective, patient-centered care (AHRQ, 2015).
