Technology and Ethics

Evaluating A Case Study

Task 3

A1. Effects of technology on memory and attention. How Does Techn

ology Affect the Attention Spans of Different Age Groups? | OxJournal

A2. Cognitive overload occurs when individuals encounter overwhelming
information, making it challenging for their brains to process data
efficiently. This condition can occur at various developmental stages and
affect learning, decision-making, and everyday functioning. As people deal
with challenging efforts from work, school, or daily life their ability to think
critically and perform tasks can diminish, leading to feelings of stress and
frustration.

Digital amnesia describes the dependence on electronic devices, such as
Google Calendar, for organizing schedules and managing tasks. While these
tools can enhance efficiency, relying on them too heavily can lead to a
decline in memory skills and independent thinking. As individuals
increasingly skip traditional methods, like writing down appointments in a
notebook calendar, they may lose their ability to recall important dates and
responsibilities. This need can foster a sense of detachment from personal
organization and a growing inability to retain information without digital
aid.

A3. Utilitarianism may not best serve all participants when considering
cognitive overload, especially in children. Introducing technology too early
can deter their exploration of the environment and development of essential
social skills. Over dependence on devices limits imaginative play and
outdoor activities, crucial for fostering creativity and problem-solving.
Without adequate unstructured play, children may struggle to navigate
social interactions and understand emotional cues. A balanced approach
that emphasizes hands-on learning and exploration is likely more beneficial
for holistic child development.
