INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION |A Contextual Approach
James W. Neuliep
HOOFDSTUK 1
Communication is the dynamic process of encoding and decoding verbal and nonverbal messages
within a defined cultural, physiological, sociorelational, and perceptual context. Although many of
our messages are sent intentionally, many others –perhaps our nonverbal messages –can
unintentionlly influence other people.
-The majority of our communicative behaviour is nonverbal, because whether we are using words or
not, we are communicating nonverbally through eye contact, body stance and space.
-Communication apprehension = the fear/anxiety people experience when communicating with
others.
Intercultural communication is communication between people of different cultures and ethnicities.
The world’s population is growing disproportionately. Techonology and his decentralizing role in
information dissemination (informatie verspreiding).
-Intercultural communication occurs whenever a minimum of two persons of different
(micro)cultures come together and exchange verba land nonverbal symbols.
-Intercultural communication occurs within and between a variety of of interconnected contexts;
cultural, microcultural, environmental, perceptual and sociorelational contexts.
--Intercultual communication apprehension: communicating with someone from a different culture
may cause anxiety because of its uncertainity level; we don’t know about the values, beliefs etc. of
the other.
-Technological advances of mass media disintegrate the natural time and space barriers inherent in
human communication. It reduces the distance between people of different cultures and societies.
-Information empowers people.
India: mobiele telefoons geven mensen de mogelijkheid om te communiceren met mensen buiten
hun ‘kaste’.
--Arthur Schlesinger waarschuwde dat de geschiedenis ons verteld wat er gebeurt als mensen van
verschillende culturele, ethnische, religieuze of taalkundige achtergrond samenkomen.
--De angst voor het onbekende is de grootste aanstichter van vijandigheid tussen verschillende
groepen. > Xenophobia Therefor a common goal is needed to bind diverse people together.
--Through competent intercultural communication conflicts, which are often fueled by political,
ethnic and religious differences, can be managed and reduced.
--Benefits of communicating with people from other cultures: healtier communities, increased
(inter)national and local commerce, reduced conflict and personal growth through increased
tolerance.
Commerce = handel
Solitary confinement (eenzame opsluiting) is the worst punishment on humans. Communicatie is dus
essentieel voor mensen.
