QUESTION 1
Kohlberg’s theory of moral development explains how individuals develop moral
reasoning through six progressive stages. These stages are grouped into three levels:
pre-conventional, conventional, and post-conventional morality.
Level 1: Pre-Conventional Morality
Stage 1: Obedience and Punishment Orientation
At this stage, individuals judge actions based on their consequences, particularly
punishment. A person obeys rules to avoid punishment rather than because they
understand moral values.
Example: A child avoids stealing because they fear being punished.
Stage 2: Individualism and Exchange
Here, individuals begin to recognise that different people have different perspectives.
Actions are guided by self-interest and mutual benefit.
Example: A learner helps a classmate with homework expecting help in return.
Level 2: Conventional Morality
Stage 3: Good Interpersonal Relationships
At this stage, individuals behave in ways that gain approval from others. Being “good”
means maintaining relationships and meeting social expectations.
Example: A student behaves well in school to be seen as a good person by teachers
and peers.
Stage 4: Maintaining Social Order
