Grade 7 Chapter1
Intergers
Notes 1.2
Representation of Integers on Number line
Integers:
• The set of Integers consists of Whole numbers, Negative numbers and 0 (Zero).
• The set of integers is denoted by Z. Z = {…….-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3 ……}
• Zero (0) is neither positive or negative.
• The smallest positive integer is 1.
• The largest negative integer is -1.
• We know how to represent integers on a number line. Let us draw one such number line.
• The points to the right of 0 are denoted by + sign and are positive integers.
• The points to the left of 0 are denoted by – sign and are negative integers.
• Subtract a positive integer from a given integer, we move to the left.
Example: When we subtract +2 from -3, move 2 places from -3 towards left to get -5
• (iv) subtract a negative integer from a given integer, we move to the right
Example: When we subtract -2 from -3, move 2 places from -3 towards right to get 1
