General Conditions - ANS✔✔ *Provisions that establish the legal responsibilities and
relationships among the parties involved in the Work of the Contract
*Often preprinted documents published by professional and other industry associations and by

AIA General Conditions - ANS✔✔ *Began in 1888 as the "Uniform Contract", which was a
printed contract form designed for use as the contractual agreement between the owner and
contractor.
*In 1911, divided into two parts: the Agreement and the General Conditions
*10 year cycle of restudy and rewriting
EJCDC General Conditions - ANS✔✔ *Began in 1963, by the Professional Engineers in Private
Practice (PEPP), published many contract forms.
*In the 1970's, NSPE, ACEC, and ASCE joined together to form the EJCDC
*Responsible for preparing engineering related construction contract documents
"The Work" for engineers, is the entire completed construction; for architects: - ANS✔✔ it may
be completed and partially completed construction.
For engineers, substitutions may be requested only after the Agreement is signed, and then
according to detailed rules for submission and assumption of responsibility by the Contractor;
for architects: - ANS✔✔ these procedures are defined in the Supplementary Conditions
