1.Chinese poetry - discuss how you would use lighting in this extract to portray atmosphere

- 1. Single spotlight over the girls - single one on the stage (white light) intensity 50%
- 2. Spotlight snaps fade and a 4 red fresnel focused on the desk with red gel focused on
intensity of 40%
- 3. Spotlight is bought back up and at intensity of 20% and the red fresnel cut with just
red LED strips lights lining the desk
- Spotlight begins to intensify as a red spotlight appears on the desk slowly building to
60% with a gobo - cut out block to make the appearance of a glitch effect on the stage
- Spotlight white one increases to 89% making a harsh white light over the girl as the
red reaches 80% with the gobo
- Creating a harsh clashing of light which is cut instantly as the last line finished
As a lighting designer I will use bright white spotlights cutting off an on the ‘mountain girl’
in order to convey the atmosphere of secrecy and unknown. On the line ‘The girl waits
outside the door of her house on the mountain’ I will have a white spotlight on a build to an
intensity of 50% focused on the ‘mountain girl’ on the right hand side of the thrust stage
focused on the main fly bar rig. I will also introduce a smoke machine on the right wing of
the stage casting fog over the girl which will be emphasised by the vast white light. I will do
this in order to cast shadows over the girl and darken her features, adding a sense of ominous
tone and mystery to the piece, conveying to the audience an element of uncertainty regarding
the identity of the women.
As a lighting designer I will use the colour symbolism of deep red in order to convey an
atmosphere of danger and desperation portrayed by the two men at the desk. After the first
line I will have the white spotlight on the girl cut instantly, triggering 4 fresnel with a red gel
focused on the main fly bar rig positioned on a desk with two men by it on the left hand side
of the stage. On the lines; ‘what it literally says mountain girl door, so maybe’ the 4 red
fresnel will have an intensity of 40% however when then the line ‘so maybe’ finished I will
have these fresnel cut instantly and be replaced with deep red LED strips lights at an intensity
of 60% which will line the desk casting a darkness over the rest of the stage. I will use this to
convey an undertone of desperation in the atmosphere and a sense of running out of time due
to the constant cutting and snapping of the lights going off and on, adding to the element of
mystery within the piece and a sporadic feelings due to the constant alteration of lights.
As a lighting designer I will use a gobo over the red gel on the spotlight in order to cause a
glitch effect within the piece adding to the atmosphere of lost information, confusions and
misinterpretation. On the lines ‘the girls as big as a mountain, what's the next line’ I will have
4 red fresnel slowly building in intensity from the start of the line moving from 20% to 70%
