What is a cochlear implant (CI)? A cochlear implant is an electronic device that
performs the function of damaged or absent hair
cells by providing electrical stimulation to the
remaining nerve fibers
-bypasses the inner ear, turns sound into electrical
signals sent straight to the brain
How is CI candidacy determined? 1. Pre-op Info: Med eval, CT/MRI - if cochlea not
healthy enough then can't do it, Audiological eval,
ABR, HA eval - aided testing, speech&lang eval
2. Implant Center & Surgeon: not every ENT does
CI
3. Eval Team Members: Program coordinator, ENT
surgeon, audiologist, SLP, HI teacher, etc.
4. FDA Minimum Criteria - 12+ months, degree of
loss, limited benefits from HA, highly motivated
family
CI candidacy for adults?
, CI candidacy for kids? - ChIP - children's implant profile: as a team look at
areas of great concern
What factors affect CI outcomes? -Age when the hearing loss first occurred
-Age at the time of implantation: older - alrady
developed speech = better outcome, born with
profound HL - did not develop speech and did not
develop neural pathways = worse outcomes,
implant at birth = better outcome
-Time between hearing loss and implantation
-Hearing aid use before implantation - HA keeps
brain active processing sound = good outcome
What are the CI components? 1. Microphone
2. Speech Processor 3. Transmitting Coil (attached
with a magnet) 4. Receiver/Stimulator (attached
with a magnet) 5. Electrode Array - inside cochlea
