Name the primary function of the respiratory system To maintain life
Name the secondary function of the respiratory system To produce the power supply for speech production
List the 9 parts of the respiratory passageway 1. Nasal cavity
2. Oral cavity
3. Pharynx
4. Larynx
5. Trachea
6. Bronchi
7. Bronchioles
8. Alveoli
9. Lungs
Locate the 9 parts of the respiratory passageway
Describe the function of each of the parts of the TRACHEA - a flexible tube that is about 11cm long and starts from the inferior
bronchial tree: Trachea, Hyaline Cartilage Rings & border of the larynx until it splits at the CARINA (bottom of the trachea)
Trachealis
It is made up of 16-20 HYALINE CARTILAGE RINGS connected by a fibro-elastic
membrane
The rings are for the strength of the trachea and are open in the posterior aspect
(the back of it, not a closed circle. Each one of those rings are 2-2.5cm in diameter
and this gap is spanned by the trachealis muscle.
TRACHEALIS MUSCLE - smooth muscle - involuntary - and it stays contracted
(tight) unless oxygen needs to increase, so it will relax and allow the rings of the
trachea to widen and allow more oxygen to come in
The membrane is for flexibility and movement.
, Describe the function of each of the parts of the Once it bifurcates at the carina, it splits into the right or the left MAIN STEM
bronchial tree: Main stem Bronchi (Bronchial tubes) & BRONCHI (bronchial tubes). Each main stem bronchi serves one lung. The right
Mediastinum main stem bronchi comes down at a 20-30 angle and the other side forms at a 45-
degree angle to move at the heart.
The heart is housed in the MEDIASTINUM (also in the thorax)
Describe the function of each of the parts of the Once bifurcated into each side, they keep on splitting into more levels of
bronchial tree: Bronchioles, Lungs and Alveoli BRONCHIOLES.
In the left lung, it splits 14 times
Right lung splits 28 times
Each bronchiole warm and humidify the air because cold air reduces the ability of
the lungs to exchange gases
Dryer air (lower humidity) will dry out the alveolar tissue which makes them more
susceptible to infection
The right LUNG is divided into 3 lobes
The left lung is divided into 2 lobes
Because of the heart
The final branch is called TERMINAL RESPIRATORY BRONCHIOLES.
At the end of each one are little air sacs which are called ALVEOLI.
The alveoli are where the gas exchange happens to oxygenate blood.
Locate each part of the bronchial tree
List the 3 parts of the support structure for respiration 1. Vertebrae
2. Rib cage
3. Abdomen
How many vertebrae are in the vertebral column? 33
what are the 5 divisions of the vertebral column? 1. Cervical (C1-C7)
2. Thoracic (T1-T12)
3. Lumbar (L1-L5)
4. Sacral (S1-S5)
5. Coccygeal
