Topic - Heredity (Class - 1)

Heredity (inheritance):
It is the process of having traits (characteristics) from parents to offspring
(progeny).

Types of Traits
1. Inherited Trait
- The trait that passed from parents to children.
- Ex: hair colour, eye colour, shape of earlobes, etc.

2. Acquired Traits
- The trait that is acquired in a lifetime by an individual.
- Ex: - Gaining knowledge
- building muscles
- Acquired traits do not include gene concept.

[Diagram Note: This section contains two hand-drawn sketches of ears labeled
"Detached earlobes" and "Attached earlobes".]

Q. On what basis were the characteristics passing from parents to offspring?

Ans: Gregor Mendel is called the father of genetics. Genetics is a branch of biology
that deals with the study of heredity.

, NOTES

FATHER OF INHERITANCE

GREGOR MENDEL

-> HE DISCOVERED THE LAW OF INHERITANCE PRINCIPLES OF HEREDITY.
-> IT TELLS ENTIRE THINGS ABOUT HEREDITY.

HOW DID HE DISCOVER THE LAW OF INHERITANCE?
- BY DOING LOTS OF EXPERIMENTS ON GARDEN PEA PLANT.

WHY DID MENDEL SELECT GARDEN PEA PLANT FOR HIS EXPERIMENTS?
- GARDEN PEA PLANT -> PISUM SATIVUM
BCS:- 1) LESSER LIFE SPAN
2) MANY GENERATIONS CAN BE OBSERVED AND STUDIED.
3) EASY TO GROW
4) IT SHOWS 7 CHARACTERS.
