2026/2027 Biology 30 (Alberta) Reproduction and Embryology Latest (Graded A+) Kidney - Filters blood of impurities (eg. Urea) and produces urine. Ureter - Transports urine to the bladder for storage. Bladder - Stores urine. Urethra - Common duct for the excretion of urine and semen from ejaculation. Testes - Produces sperm under the influence of FSH and testosterone under the influence of LH. Epididymis - Involved in sperm maturation (first 2/3rd's) - last 3rd is involved in mature sperm storage. Prostate - Secrete's an alkaline solution (pH 7.2) to neutralize the somewhat acidic nature of the vaginal tract. Cowper's gland - Secretes mucus to remove urine byproducts (i.e uric acid or urea) from the urethra prior to ejaculation of semen. Seminal vesicle - Secretes fructose [C6 sugar] in the vas deferens. The secreted fructose is used for ATP in the sperm. Vas deferens - Muscular tube extending from the epididymis, through the prostate, and to the urethra. First 1/3rd stores sperm. The next 2/3rds go through peristalsis to allow for ejaculation of semen out of the urethra.
