UICT-RESEARCH METHODS 1
WHAT IS RESEARCH?
Knowing facts or fixing our beliefs about …., or searching for knowledge about a
particular person, object and phenomenon, takes many forms but research is the most
significant one. Others are;
Tenacity (persistence/tendency to continue to believe a proposition through
habit) e.g. by culture/custom
Authority (consulting an authority or seeking confirmation from an expert)
Intuition (perception, or explanation or insight into a phenomenon by instinct
without relying upon its appeal to reason)
Experience (Human beings learn through their experiences in life)
Logic (This is a time–tested technique of coming to the truth through reasoning
out issues. Experts gradually deliberate on issues, weighing merits and demerits
until they develop lasting conclusions or generalizations).
However, these do experience significant shortcomings, which are non-existent in
research.
Scientific method (This is a systematic process of collecting data relating to a
phenomenon, and scientifically analysing the data to develop inferences or
conclusions about the issue at hand)
Research as a fact-finding form goes beyond describing to analyzing, assessing,
establishing, comparing, evaluating, determining etc.
Research looks for explanations, relationships, comparisons, predictions,
generalization and theories.
Definitions
1. Research is the systematic process of collecting and analyzing information to
increase our understanding of the phenomenon under study.
2. A careful investigation or inquiry especially through search for new facts in any
branch of knowledge.
3. Research is an organized, systematic, data-based, critical, objective, scientific
inquiry or investigation into a specific problem.
4. Research is a scientific and systematic search for information on specific topic-
name scientific research, which is defined as a systematic, controlled, empirical
and critical investigation of hypothetical propositions about the presumed
relations among natural phenomena.
5. Ghosh (1992) defined research as “a careful critical enquiry or examination in
seeking facts or principles; diligent investigation in order to ascertain something.”
Research attempts therefore to give new direction into the existing problem.
6. Research can also be defined as a systematic and objective activity of discovering
knowledge to answer a certain question or solve a problem.
We can now define research as the systematic collection, analysis, and
interpretation of data to answer a certain question or solve a problem.
Research can be described as a systematic, objective and deliberate
investigation to discover new knowledge of a particular subject matter or
topic and the application of knowledge to the solution of a problem.
