In order to be effective teachers, we must create assessments that guide instruction. One
article states, “assessment can be defined as any method through which one gathers data or
information about something” (Coil, 2014). We need to analyze and unpack standards to fully
comprehend what we must teach our students and what we should assess them on. Teachers can
assess students in a variety of ways during units of instruction. Utilizing formative and
summative assessments help teachers understand what their students are mastering and what
needs to be retaught. Additionally, the results of assessments assist in creating small groups and
differentiation. Miller states, “well-constructed teacher-made tests provide a means for teachers
, 2
to gather evidence about student performance, identify student strengths and weaknesses, and
evaluate progress and mastery of district, state, and national standards” (ACE, 2020).
This paper will consist of summative and formative assessments, as well as a
performance task that would be used during a second-grade math unit of study. The assessments
will provide me the opportunity to reflect on my teaching and provide guidance in understanding
what my students have learned and where additional support is needed.

123 books. How many books did she put away in all? Use the open number line to solve.
