Introduction
Conducting evaluations and providing feedback is necessary to ensure highly qualified
educators are teaching our students and providing all of their students the opportunity to succeed
academically. One article states, “a teacher evaluation system should measure a teacher’s
strengths and weaknesses through an accurate and consistent process that provides timely and
useful feedback” (Callahan & Sadeghi, 2015, p. 48). This assignment allowed me the opportunity
to work with my mentor to compare, collaborate, and discuss findings related to a classroom
observation. Some surprising and important details were noted during our discussion regarding
the observation. We also worked to discuss the information we would provide to the teacher to

improve instruction and help the teacher be even more effective with their students.
My mentor, Ms. Maureen Howard, has taught for over 35 years. She was a classroom
teacher and a special education coordinator. Currently, she is the assistant principal at Grand
Concourse Academy (GCA), a supervisor for elementary grades, and a testing coordinator. I
work very closely with Ms. Howard since I am a special education teacher and also the special
education coordinator at GCA. I am always seeking advice and support to ensure I am successful
in my position at school. Ms. Howard was immediately interested in participating in this
assignment and discussing my thoughts and feelings regarding the observation as she is guiding
me to be an administrator at the school. She also observed the third-grade main idea lesson for
this assignment and used the tally marks observation tool. After Ms. Howard viewed the
observation video, we sat together to discuss our thoughts on the lesson and our
recommendations for the teacher.
Findings and Consensus
As a seasoned professional, Ms. Howard quickly and easily made note of some important
events that took place in the classroom we observed. After a long conversation, we noted a few
similarities and differences in our observation notes. For instance, we both noted that Mrs.
Barbee had excellent classroom management. She spoke in a low tone, her students never called
out, and they listened quietly during the lesson. In addition, we both noticed how she constantly
circulated the classroom and attended to every group as the students were working on their tasks.
Furthermore, we noticed how Mrs. Barbee would change the response her children provided to a
correct response instead of allowing other students to help out, add their thoughts, or guide the
particular student to give more thought to their own answer in order to give a more correct
response. In addition, Ms. Howard noticed how many of the students appeared to not understand
the concept being taught because a lot of the students had their heads on their desks and not a lot
