,Introduction:
This document provides a detailed analysis of the FreshChoice case study for the April 2026
Unit 6 exam. It covers everything students need to know about the company, from its business
goals to the challenges that the business faces, along with the corresponding proposals.
Please note that the document contains significantly more information than students will need
m
for the exam. The approach is to allow students to select the topics and theory they feel most
confident about to use in the exam in order to help them achieve a Distinction grade. Students
co
can pick and choose the most relevant information that showcases their understanding of
principles of management.
s.
The document will continue to be updated up until the April 2026 exam, based on feedback from
te
students. Please send feedback, suggestions and any questions to
to help improve the resource.

Understanding the Case Study:
ss
Overview
ne
FreshChoice is a British supermarket chain that has been operating for 10 years, alongside
si
other well-known supermarkets such as Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Aldi. They are
ranked 8th in the UK supermarkets and sales revenue 2025 (Figure 3). Their current workforce
bu
structure is entirely made up of full-time employees (100%) which is far above the industry
average (73%), however employees do receive a wage above the national minimum and do
ec
have a wide range of benefits to help motivate them. However, there are two main recurring
themes throughout the case study. The first is a lack of flexibility arising from the full-time staff
that means employees struggle to meet their family/childcare commitments and causes stress
bt
when needing to book time off. The second is issues with training, where some employees do
not receive training at all and others receive training for roles that they are not in. Despite these
challenges, the company aims to continue growing, satisfy their customers and reduce their
labour turnover.

, Business Goals
FreshChoice has three business goals:
1. To become one of the top five supermarkets in the UK by sales revenue by 2030
a. To achieve this, the business will need to focus on customer satisfaction in order
to attract customers away from their competitors. Figure 3 shows they are
currently 8th and so at the current time, they would need to rank above Aldi to
m
achieve this goal.
2. To achieve a customer satisfaction rate above 90%
co
a. As shown in Figure 1, customer satisfaction is only 50% (by adding the “Agree”
(22%) and the “Strongly agree” (28%)).
3. To reduce labour turnover by 30%
s.
a. As shown in Figure 2, the labour turnover is currently 45%, and the business
te
aims to get it down to 30% which is the industry average.

What FreshChoice is Doing Well
There are many things that FreshChoice is currently doing well including:
ss
1. Hourly wage is above the national minimum
a. Pay can act as a motivator for employees and so by paying them well,
ne
employees are motivated to increase their output
2. A range of fringe benefits such as discount and opportunities to purchase shares
si
a. These are examples of financial motivators
3. Invitations to regular local and national social events
bu
a. These are examples of non-financial motivators
b. Links to the Social Tier of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
ec
4. Digital learning platform
a. While there are challenges with this platform, the fact that such a platform is in
bt
place shows the businesses effort to upskill their employees
5. Flat organisational structure
a. A flat structure is where there are few levels within a business, this can reduce
cost as communication is quicker and more efficient
6. New technology to improve stock control and reduce wastage
