Spurling's test - Answer with head extended and rotated toward painful shoulder, place hand
on top of head, apply pressure. + pain with this maneuver. evaluates for cervical nerve
impingement
Apprehension test - Answer pt holds arms in neutral position, elevated 90 degrees. place
mild pressure on anterior aspect of arm while rotating externally. + pain with this maneuver.
suggests glenohumeral joint instability
Sulcus test - Answer pt's arm relaxed at their side. grasp pt elbow and pull down. + sulcus
appears in subacromial area, in cms.
suggests shoulder instability
Empty can test - Answer elevate arms to 90 degrees, internally rotate arms with thumbs
pointing down, as if emptying a can, ask pt to resist as you apply pressure. + weakness during
this maneuver. suggests possible rotator cuff tear
Hawkin's test - Answer flex pt's shoulder and elbow to 90 degrees with palms facing down.
with one hand on forearm and one on upper arm, rotate arm internally. + pain with this
maneuver. suggests possible inflammation or rotator cuff tear
Neer's test - Answer stabilize scapula with one hand, raise pt's arm with the other. + pain
with this maneuver. suggesting possible inflammation or rotator cuff tear.
Apley's Scratch test - Answer have pt touch their scapula with opposing hand.
+ difficulty reaching. suggests rotator cuff tear or adhesive capsulitis
test for medial epicondylitis - Answer pt arm flexed at 90 degrees with palm up, hold pt's
elbow and palm. ask pt to flex wrist and forearm pronation while applying pressure. + pain.

Tinel's sign - Answer strike median nerve; + nerve tingling or pricking sensation radiating
from wrist to hand, esp thumb.
