What is Reading Comprehension?
Understanding what examiners are testing
Reading comprehension tests your ability to understand, analyse, and respond to
a written passage. In Class 9–12 board exams, comprehension typically carries
20–30 marks and tests four core skills:
Skill What It Tests Example Task
Literal Can you find facts directly stated in 'According to the passage, what
Understanding the passage? causes X?'
Inferential Thinking Can you read between the lines? 'What does the author imply about Y?'
Vocabulary Do you understand words in 'Find a word in paragraph 2 that means
context? Z.'
Summary & Title Can you identify the main idea? 'Give a suitable title for this passage.'
■ Remember
• Read the questions BEFORE reading the passage — this tells you what to look
for.
• Underline key facts, names, dates, and topic sentences as you read.
• Answers to factual questions are always in the passage — don't rely on outside
knowledge.
