QUESTION 1

1.1 Factors that led to the rise in women’s workforce participation in South
Africa

Legal and Policy Changes

After the end of Apartheid, new laws promoted equality and protected women’s
rights. Policies such as the Employment Equity Act created more opportunities for
women to enter the labour market. These changes reduced discrimination and
opened doors in many sectors.

Improved Access to Education

More women gained access to education and training over the past three decades.
Higher levels of education improved skills and confidence, making it easier for
women to find employment. Educated women are more likely to participate in the
economy and pursue careers.

Economic Pressure and Cost of Living

The rising cost of living in South Africa forced many households to depend on more
than one income. Women began working to support their families and improve their
living conditions. This made dual income households more common.

Changing Social Attitudes

Society has gradually moved away from traditional beliefs that women should only
focus on household roles. There is now greater acceptance of women working in
different industries. This shift encouraged more women to seek employment and
career growth.

Urbanisation and Industrial Growth

Urbanisation created more job opportunities in cities, especially in services, retail,
and administration. Women moved to urban areas where jobs were more available,
increasing their participation in the workforce.
