ENG2613 Assignment 1 2026 | Due 21 April 2026 - Distinction Guaranteed... Question 1 Read the story below and then answer the questions that follow. The old woman and her pig One day an old woman was sweeping her home when she found some money that she had forgotten about. She was so happy that she danced around singing. "Look at this," she said holding the money up in the air. "Now what shall I do with it? I know! I will go to the market and buy a pig." So, the next day she went to the market and bought a nice little pig. She put a collar on the pig, tied a string on the collar and began to walk home with it. On the way, they came across a low wooden fence. The old woman said, "Please, Pig, get over the fence." But the pig would not get over the fence. No matter how she pleaded, the pig would not move. Just then a dog came trotting up and the old woman said to him, "Dog, Dog! Come here. Please chase this pig. He won't get over the fence and I won't get home tonight." But the dog would not chase the pig. Author: Wendy Hartman Source: The old woman and her pig- Nalibali 1.1 What kind of literature does this story belong to? , ENG2613 ASSIGNMENT 1 2026
DUE 21 APRIL 2026

Question 1
Read the story below and then answer the questions that follow.
The old woman and her pig
One day an old woman was sweeping her home when she found some money that she
had forgotten about. She was so happy that she danced around singing.

1.1 What kind of literature does this story belong to? Is it fiction or non-fiction? –
fantasy or realism? - and prose, poetry or drama? Give two reasons from the
passage for your answers.

Fiction.
Under fantasy sub-genre of fiction and is written as prose.

It is fiction because it is a made-up story that comes from the writer’s imagination rather
than real people or events (Tutorial Letter 501, 2023, Unit 1.4.3).
The events are not factual; they form a chain of imaginary actions where animals and
objects behave like people. It is fantasy (not realism) because the pig, dog, water, ox,
rope and mouse all speak or act with human intentions and emotions for example, the
mouse stops and says, “Yes, I will chew the rope, if you will give me some cheese”

It is prose because the text is written in continuous paragraphs using everyday spoken
language, divided into sentences rather than stanzas or acts/scenes
(Tutorial Letter 501, 2023, Unit 1.4.2.1).
