Acquired /adaptive immunity
It’s the immunity Acquired during life
Mediators of acquired immunity are T &B lymphocytes, complements, Antigen processing cells,
Cytokines
Characteristic Properties of acquired immunity
• Response occurs in days-week
• Require prior exposure
• Specific
• Memory present
• Diversity is wide
Difference between Innate and acquired immunity
Innate immunity Acquired immunity
Possess from birth Acquired during lifetime
Prior exposure to antigen is not required Develops following the antigenic exposure
Immunological memory absent Immunological memory present
Classification of acquired immunity
1.Active immunity
It’s the resistance developed by the host after the exposure
2 types
a)Natural active immunity-immunity developed after natural infection
Ex:immunity developed after Measles,Chicken pox
b)Artificial active immunity- induced by Vaccines
• Leads to stimulation of immune apparatus to form antibodies /immunologically active
cells
• Develops after latent period
• Long lasting immunity
Mechanism of active immunity
