 QUESTION 1

1. Two high school learners came to you confused about the physical properties of metals and
nonmetal. In a table form, contrast the differences between the physical properties of metals and
nonmetals.

Physical Property Metals Nonmetals
Appearance Usually shiny, with a metallic Dull, without a metallic luster.
luster (Betts et al., 2022).
Malleability Malleable, can be hammered or Not malleable; they are brittle
pressed into different shapes and will shatter when
without breaking (Betts et al., hammered.
2022).
Ductility Ductile, can be drawn into thin Not ductile; they are not capable
wires (Betts et al., 2022). of being drawn into wires.
Conductivity Good conductors of heat and Poor conductors of heat and
electricity (Betts et al., 2022). electricity.
State at Room Temperature Most are solid (except mercury) Exist as solids, liquids, or gases.
(Betts et al., 2022).

2. The periodic table is the organized array of all the chemical elements in order of increasing
atomic number, that is, the total number of protons in the atomic nucleus. Please answer the
following questions based on the periodic table .

2.1. How many electrons, neutrons, and protons does an aluminum atom have?

An aluminum atom has 13 protons, 13 electrons, and 14 neutrons (Betts et al., 2022). (Its atomic
number is 13, and its mass number is 27, so 27 - 13 = 14 neutrons).

2.2. How many element groups are there in the periodic table?

There are 18 groups in the periodic table (Betts et al., 2022). (This is determined by counting the
columns in the table shown in Figure 2.4).

2.3. To which group does hydrogen belong?

Hydrogen belongs to Group 1, though it is placed alone on the top row due to its unique properties
(Betts et al., 2022).

2.4. What is the atomic weight of copper?

The atomic weight of copper is 63.55 (Betts et al., 2022). (This is found in Figure 2.4, which lists
copper (Cu) with an atomic weight of 63.55).

2.5. What is the atomic mass of Nitrogen?

The atomic mass of nitrogen is 14.01 (Betts et al., 2022). (This is found in Figure 2.4, which lists
nitrogen (N) with an atomic mass of 14.01).
