Iago didn’t have to invent a new personality for Othello; he simply acted as a catalyst for
the fears that were already dormant in Othello’s mind.
Iago is often called a ‘mechanic of the soul.’ He doesn’t use brute force; he finds the
structural weaknesses—the insecurities—and applies just enough pressure to make the
whole building collapse.
