Pharmacology.
Clozapine
atypical Antipsychotic, Blocks dopamine/serotonin, used for schizo.
Adverse- weight gain, dry mouth, endocrine effects
Olanzipine (Zyprexa)
atypical Antipsychotic, Blocks dopamine/serotonin, used for schizo.
Adverse- weight gain, dry mouth, endocrine effects
Quetapine (Seroquel)
atypical Antipsychotic, Blocks dopamine/serotonin, used for schizo.
Adverse- weight gain, dry mouth, endocrine effects
Fluoxetine (Prozac)
SSRI, used for depression. Blocks serotonin reuptake and increases
monoamine. GIVE WITH FOOD. Adverse- Sexual dysfunction, serotonin
syndrome (altered LOC, tremor, Hyperreflexia).
Venlafaxine (Effexor)
SNRI, used for depression. Blocks Norepi and dopamine reuptake.
Adverse- nervousness, hypertension.
1|Page
,Amytriptyline, amines, and Doxepin
Tricyclic antidepressants, used for depression. Adverse-hypotension,
cardiotoxicity (used gastric lavage and sodium bicarb). NO MAOI's or
Anticholinergic.
Isocarboxazid
MAOI, used for depression. Blocks MAO enzyme (degradation of
neurotransmitters). Adverse- Hypertension/Hypotension, and agitation.
AVOID TYRAMINE.
Phenelzine
MAOI, used for depression. Blocks MAO enzyme (degradation of
neurotransmitters). Adverse- Hypertension/Hypotension, and agitation.
AVOID TYRAMINE.
tranylycypromine
MAOI, used for depression. Blocks MAO enzyme (degradation of
neurotransmitters). Adverse- Hypertension/Hypotension, and agitation.
AVOID TYRAMINE.
Bupropion (Wellbutrin)
atypical antidepressant, used for depression. Blocks reuptake of
dopamine and NE. Adverse- seizures, agitation

,Mirtazapine (Remeron)
atypical antidepressant, used for depression. Blocks Serotonin reuptake.
Adverse- sexual dysfunction, weight gain.
Bethanechol
Muscarinic agonist used for urinary retention. Increases smooth muscle
tone. Decreases HR, increases sweating/saliva. Empties the bladder by
relaxing sphincter and Increasing pressure. Adverse- DUMBELS
(Diaphoresis, urinary increase, brady, emesis, lacrimination, salivation.
TREAT WITH ATROPINE.
Pyridostigmine/Stigmines and Donzepil
Cholinesterase inhibitors used for MS and myasthenia gravis. Prevents
degradation of acetylcholine. (replaces acet, breaks down stigmine
slowly, cholinesterase gets tired which leads to more acetylcholine)
Increases muscle/ganglion stimulation. Adverse- Paralysis, GI/Urinary
obstruction. USED FOR ATROPINE TOXICITY.
Echothiophate
Cholinesterase inhibitor used for glaucoma. Prevents hydrolyzation of
acetylcholine. Adverse- Paralysis, increases in secretions. Toxicity-
atropine/diazepam/pralidoxime
a1
Adrenergic agonist. Vasoconstriction/dilatation of pupil. Adverse-
Baroceptor reflex (BP increase/HR decrease), HTN
3|Page
, a2
Adrenergic agonist. Decrease outflow to heart, inhibits Norepi release.
B1
Adrenergic Agonist. Increase heart force contraction, increase cardiac
output. Adverse- tachycardia/arrhythmias, angina
B2
Adrenergic Agonist. Bronchodilation relaxes smooth muscle and
increases skeletal muscle contraction. Used for asthma and delaying
pre-term labor. Adverse- tremor and hyperglycemia
Nicotine N
Stimulation of parasympathetic/sympathetic causing release of
epinephrine.
Nicontine M
Contraction of skeletal muscle
Epinephrine
