The Importance of Reading in Everyday and Academic Life
Reading is a fundamental skill that plays a vital role in both everyday life and academic
success. It allows individuals to understand their surroundings, communicate effectively
with others, and develop knowledge and critical thinking abilities. In my understanding,
reading is not only about recognising words but also about interpreting meaning,
analysing information, and engaging deeply with different types of texts, especially
literature.
In everyday life, reading helps us make sense of the world around us. For example, we
rely on reading to understand street signs, instructions, advertisements, and messages
on social media. Without reading, it would be difficult to navigate daily activities or stay
informed about current events through newspapers and online platforms. Reading also
enables us to connect with others by understanding written communication, which is
essential in both personal and professional contexts.
However, there is a clear difference between simply recognising words and engaging in
critical reading. Recognising words involves basic decoding and understanding of
language, while critical reading requires deeper thinking. It involves analysing the
author’s purpose, questioning ideas, identifying bias, and interpreting underlying
meanings. Critical reading helps individuals become more thoughtful and independent
thinkers, as they do not accept information at face value but evaluate it carefully.
Literature plays an important role in developing critical reading skills in academic life.
Through stories, poems, and plays, readers are exposed to different perspectives,
cultures, and experiences. Literature encourages readers to analyse characters,
themes, and conflicts, which enhances their ability to think critically. It also helps
readers understand how texts can present certain ideas positively or negatively,
allowing them to become more aware of different viewpoints.
