THE APPLICATION OF GFM1 — GFM1 TASK 1: TASK-CENTERED CONTRACT

Health Services Coordination, Western Governors University

HEALTH EQUITY AND SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH — D057

PRFA — GFM1

Course Instructor: Lindsay Gregory

According to Kelly (2013), “Task-centered practice is the social work technology

developed to assist clients and physicians collaborate on specific, measurable, and achievable

objectives. It is intended to be brief on average 8–12 sessions, and can be used in conjunction

with individuals, couples, families, and groups within a wide range of social work practice

contexts (Kelly, 2013).” Per Kelly, TCP is associated with a diverse-stage process that educates

practitioners to collaborate closely with clients to create distinct and achievable objectives per

the agreed-upon problem, typically referred to as a target problem (Kelly, 2013).

A1: FIVE STAGES

The task-centered practice is a well-known evidence-based practice that involves

collaborating with patients to identify “distinct and achievable objectives. Once the target issue

has been identified, the caseworker and the client will co-create the contract that contains the

target problem These purposes are fulfilled with five activities: (1.) Engage and establish rapport

, 2

with the client. Will utilize Motivational Interviewing in order to initiate communication, build

trust, and encourage the patient. (2.) Identify the target issue or goal. Will discuss current issues

and potential outcomes with the potential to establish shared decision-making regime.

This will be beneficial in devising specific goals and increase patient outcomes (3.)

Identify task(s) (or any finite objectives) for implementation by the client and clinician, with

defined accountability. Will continue to discuss targeted problems and utilize the most effective

method of implementation while adhering to targeted timeline. (4.) Review the action plan with a

touchback. Will discuss the plan of action with the patient to ensure that the patient understands,

thus acknowledging the plan of care. (5.) Develop a timeframe for task implementation. Will

ensure that the patient understands the timeframe that has been established.

A2: CHOICE OF TASK-CENTERED CONTRACT APPROACH

The task-centered contract approach is effective at addressing client needs because it is an

active, direct, and easily measured way to concentrate on actionable solutions for specific

problems. Furthermore, the TCP approach acknowledges the socioeconomic factors that

contribute to client issues. In addition, the task-centered approach allows the client and provider

to work collaboratively to determine distinct and achievable objectives per the agreed-upon

problem.

A3: USEFULNESS OF TASK-CENTERED CONTRACT APPROACH

The task-centered contract approach can be helpful in the realm of behavioral health.

According to, “The task-centered method originally grew out of the short-term psychodynamic

model of the early 1960s. The short-term psychodynamic model was an effort to develop brief

interventional psychodynamic therapy. The task-centered contract approach is beneficial in

behavioral health because the course of treatment is short-term (approximately eight sessions),

focuses on crucial problems early in therapy, and helps the client develop specific goals to
