Strategic Topics Twin Pines Medical Center (TPMC)
1. Community goals
According to Twin Pines Medical Center (TPMC), the medical center has a small health center committed
to serving predominantly impoverished and underserved inhabitants in northern Louisiana. The TPMC
facilities is a 34-bed hospital for inpatient services which provides services such as family medicine,
dental, pharmaceutical, and gynecological medical care. TPMC reports that non-Hispanic Blacks and
Native Americans represent populations at higher risk for diabetes. In addition, due to social
determinants of health in terms of the lack of access to care due to patients being uninsured or
underinsured is causing an overutilization of the TPMC Emergency Department medical services by
patients with diabetes due to delivering critical care for diabetic-related medical conditions that could be
prevented if treatment were available earlier (TPMC, n.d.).
Therefore, based on current needs, TPMC’s goals for affiliation should be aimed toward expansion in
terms of developing partnerships with other community non-profit health care organizations such as
free or low-cost health clinics. Free clinics are non-profit facilities, which will be financed by the
government or by private donors, who provide primary, preventive, and supplemental health services to
the medically underserved. Therefore, TPMC can seek to expand and/or collaborate with other
healthcare organizations an become and affiliate which would enable the Emergency Department to
treat critical care for diabetic-related conditions and then refer the patients to the clinic for continued
diabetic education and health maintenance (Healthsherpa, n.d.).
