Student Strategies for Objective Assessments
Before embarking on a scholastic journey, a student must mentally prepare by
familiarizing themselves with school policies, guidelines, and expectations. The student in the
scenario could have employed a more effective approach to prevent frustration and enhance their
objective assessment. First, the student could have revised the retake requirements before
attempting the objective assessment. The Being Successful with Online Proctoring resource
clearly states, “The Instructor must approve second and subsequent exam attempts. Consult with
the Instructor to develop a personalized study plan before retaking the assessment” (Western
Governors University, 2025). The student would have avoided frustration by simply reviewing
this policy and understanding that a mandatory study meeting needs to be scheduled.
A second action the student could have taken is to prepare their testing environment with
adequate time before the assessment. The Assessment Policies guide states, “A secure
environment is defined as a place that is clear of any papers, books, and other materials. This
includes any items on the walls around them.” (Western Governors University, 2025). In
addition, “Students need to ensure the external webcam is correctly placed at enough distance …
so their eyes, hands, face, and keyboard area are visible” (Western Governors University, 2025).
Allowing thirty minutes beforehand to prepare the workspace and set up the webcam would have
avoided delays during the environment check.
An effective note-taking technique that students can use is the Cornell Note-Taking
Method. According to the Note-taking Methods resource, this method “divides the page into
three sections to encourage question formulation, identification of key ideas, and summarization
of information” (Western Governors University, 2025). The Cornell Note-Taking Method
prepares students by reinforcing key concepts and supporting memory retention.
