Role of families
1. Parents should bring up their children in a Christian household in order to teach their
children the beliefs and practices of Christianity. In Matthew 28, “Go and make disciples in
every nation”, it reminds Christians to share God’s word to other people, including their
children. This allows everyone the opportunity to experience God’s limitless affection and
His eternal forgiveness. Therefore, within a Christian family, one may recite grace before and
after meals to teach children that God provides and sustains all. In addition, by being aware
that the food on their tables is a grace and luxury, children are encouraged to thank God for
all His good deeds and be aware of His active work within one’s life. This may prompt
children to desire to help the poor and vulnerable by participating in church events such as
donating to local food banks alongside their parents. This fulfils the Great Commission as
Christian parents train up their children to follow Jesus’ example by being generous to give,
raising the next generation of Christians.
2. Christian parents also serve as an example on how to live out healthy and respectful
relationships. In the 10 commandments, “Honour your father and mother”, this verse
reminds children that their actions, thoughts and general behaviour are first a reflection of
God’s nature and secondly the fruit of how one has been brought up by their parents. This
purely stems from how their parents behave within family life in which children reciprocate
into society. Therefore, the ideal family unit for Catholics is a nuclear family which consists
of a father, mother and children because they believe children are able to experience both
masculine and feminine roles within the family as well as observe what a healthy, sacrificial
relationship in marriage is. This encourages children to cultivate the value of hospitality both
to their friends and family but also to people unknown in society which follows Jesus'
example in the Bible to be welcoming and kind to all people regardless of faith, race and/ or
beliefs.
Divergence
CofE recommends every diocese to encourage parishes to provide marriage preparation courses
Learn to reconcile than to fight/ harbour grudges – set example to children
Strengthens family life as parents are able to cope with the challenges of marriage plus to
added responsibility to care for children
Catholics believe the family is central to society
, Describe 3 roles of a family unit
1. Bring children up in alignment with Christian values and beliefs (Proverbs 22:6)
2. Parents serve as an example on how to live and obey God’s commandments eg 10
commandments
3. Teach children how to show hospitality, respect and form healthy relationships (Matthew 5
“Love your enemies”)
Describe 3 purposes of a family unit
1. Procreation (Genesis 1:28)
2. Teach children how to show hospitality, respect and form healthy relationships (Catholic
Catechism “The family is the original cell of social life”)
3. Evangelise by teaching children how to live and obey God’s commandments (Matthew 28)
State 3 types of family units
1. Nuclear family (Genesis “I shall make a suitable helper for him (man)”)
2. Single parent family
3. Extended family
Same sex relationships/ Homosexual relationships
Beliefs/ Divergence
1. Catholics
Homosexual relationships are not ideal because God created man and woman for
each other, therefore mankind does not have the authority to go against our creator
(Genesis “I shall make him a suitable helper for him”).
In addition, it is believed that marriage is meaningless as procreation is not able to
happen which may undermine the value of heterosexual marriages. (Genesis 1:28)
2. Quakers
Fully accept homosexual relationships as adultery is more sinful in comparison to a
same sex marriage where the two are deeply devoted to each other and to God
through their faith (10 commandments “Thy shall not covet thy wife”).
Many argue that it is God’s plan for one to enter a same sex relationship and regard
it as unfair to have different rules for different people which goes against Jesus’
teachings on agape love (Genesis 1:27 “God created mankind in His image”).
By disregarding homosexual relationships, it may cause discrimination and prejudice
due to lack of understanding and isolating other people’s views.
