Describe Christian beliefs about marriage (6)
Christians believe that marriage is a commitment for life. The phrase “till death do us part” in the
wedding vows reminds one that marriage is the unity of man and woman under God’s witness. In an
Orthodox wedding, the wedding ring, which represents this commitment, is exchanged from the
right to the left hand-side to also symbolise the couple entering into each other’s heart and their
responsibility to care, love and honour one another through joys and hardships in following Jesus'
example. Therefore, Christians may wear the ring as it serves as an outward sign of the couple’s
marriage to ensure they uphold their vocation to follow Christ through marriage.
Christians also believe that marriage is a sign of God’s love for the church. John 13:34 “Love one
another as I have loved you”. Christians believe that Jesus’ crucifixion was the ultimate act of love
and believe it is their responsibility to give God’s unconditional love back to other people therefore
during a Christian marriage, the church is deeply involved in order to share God’s love to the newly
wedded couple to help them on their journey in faith. During a Catholic wedding, the couple
exchange wedding vows to give themselves to each other, the church and to God who witnesses
their faith to each other and to God which serves as a reminder that God is omnipresent in one's life.
Lastly, Christians believe that marriage is a vocation. Ephesians 5 “man will leave his father and
mother…two will become one flesh” illustrates that marriage is the commitment to start a new
family dedicated to God. Catholics believe that marriage is a vocation from God in which Christians
feel a calling to continue their mission to spread God’s word through the form of doing it in union
with a partner. This united calling may be in the form of having kids. From the story of creation,
some Christians feel it is their duty to help them grow in their spiritual faith in God and to continue
to share God’s love to their neighbours. Therefore, Christian families may participate in religious
holidays such as Christmas to bring the Bible to life and help the children learn more about God.
