LYMPHOPROLIFERATIVE DISORDERS (LPDs)
Definition:
LPDs are malignant disease of the lymphoid cells and cells of the reticuloendothelial system that
usually occur in people with compromised immune system such as patients with AIDS and recent
transplant patients. They are characterized by the abnormal proliferation of lymphocyte into a
monoclonal lymphocytosis (Lymphoid blood cancer).
LPDs are classified into four:
1. B-cell Non Hodgkin lymphoma
2. T-cell Non Hodgkin lymphoma
3. NK cell lymphoma
4. Hodgkin lymphoma
B-cell Non Hodgkin lymphoma
It is the most common Non Hodgkin lymphoma. It develops quickly in lymph nodes and often in
the spleen, liver and bone marrow.
T-cell Non Hodgkin lymphoma
It develops in lymphoid tissues such as lymph nodes, spleen and originate from T-cells (a type of
cancer that develops from T-lymphocytes). Normally T-cells grow and divide in a controlled
manner (grow out of control, leading to swelling, organ damage and immune system
dysfunction).
NK cell lymphoma
NK-cell lymphoma is a rare and aggressive type of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma that develops from
natural killer (NK) cells, a type of immune cell that fights viruses and abnormal cells. It is most
commonly seen in Asia and Latin America. It is one of the most easily treated types of cancer.
Hodgkin lymphoma
It is relatively aggressive cancer and can quickly spread through the body. It is the most easily
treated types of cancer. It is a type of cancer of the lymphatic system where when abnormal B-
lymphocytes (B-cells) grow uncontrollably .
