0 1 A student sets up the apparatus to determine g. The apparatus is set up as shown in
figure 1.A steel ball bearing is held by an electromagnet. When the electromagnet is
switched off, the ball falls through a height h and passes through two light gates
connected to a stopwatch, which records the time t of fall between them.
Figure 1
The student records the following results in table 1:
Table 1
h (m) t₁ (s) t₂ (s) t₃ (s) Mean t (s)
0.500 0.319 0.321 0.317
0.450 0.303 0.301 0.305
0.400 0.285 0.283 0.287
0.350 0.267 0.265 0.269
0.300 0.247 0.249 0.245
0.250 0.225 0.227 0.223

,0 1 . 1 Complete the mean t column in the table above. Show your working for the h = 0.500 m
row.
[1 mark]
0 1 . 2 The student intends to plot a graph of 2h/t on the y-axis against t on the x-axis to
determine g. Show that this relationship can be derived from the equation of
motion h = ut + ½gt², where u is the speed of the ball at the upper light gate.
[2 marks]
0 1 . 3 Using h = 0.500 m and its mean t, calculate the value of 2h/t.
Give your answer to 3 significant figures.

, 0 1 . 4 The student finds that the gradient of the graph is 9.74 m s⁻². The accepted value of
g is 9.81 m s⁻². Suggest two reasons why the student's value may differ from the
accepted value.
[2 marks]
0 1 . 5 The student wants to reduce the uncertainty in the measurement of h.
State one practical step they could take and explain why it reduces uncertainty.
