Topic Identification
One significant issue in healthcare is the racial and ethnic disparities in
maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States. Black and Indigenous
women face significantly higher risks of pregnancy-related complications
and death than their White counterparts, even when accounting for
socioeconomic factors. These disparities are largely preventable and rooted
in systemic bias, unequal access to care, and insufficient patient advocacy.
Professionally, this topic resonates with me because I have witnessed how
implicit bias and inadequate communication can endanger maternal health.
Addressing maternal inequities is vital for safe, just, and ethical nursing
care.

Discussion of Research
To investigate research on maternal health disparities, I used Capella
University's Summon tool and searched multiple databases including
PubMed, CINAHL, and Scopus. My keyword combinations included
“maternal mortality racial disparities,” “Black maternal health outcomes,”
and “health equity in obstetric care.” I applied filters for peer-reviewed
articles published between 2022 and 2025, written in English, and related to
nursing, public health, or obstetrics.
From an initial pool of over 180 articles, I reviewed abstracts for relevance
to clinical practice, statistical evidence, and suggested interventions. I
selected three articles based on their methodological rigor, contemporary
insights, and actionable recommendations. These included a systematic
review on disparities, a nurse-led intervention to improve obstetric
outcomes, and a cross-sectional study on implicit bias in maternity units.
