1. 5 special senses

How are they carried?: vision, hearing, equilibrium, taste, smell

specialized organs containing receptor cells-carry impulses by way of specialized somatic
and visceral afferents.
2. Touch is what type of sense?

Is the organ specialized?: Somatic No. Uses general receptors composed of modified
dendrites of sensory neurons.

3. Organ responsible for sight: eye
4. 3 layers of the eye-outer to inner: Sclera(posterior, "whites of the eyes")+cornea
(anterior, transparent)

Choroid, ciliary muscle, iris

Sensory layer-retina, lens, vitreous body

5. What fills the space between the cornea and lens: Aqueous humor

6. Choroid of the eye:

Contains what?: Posterior middle portion of eye

Prevents light from dispersing from the eye

Highly vascular and supplies blood to other layers of the eye

7. Ciliary body of the eye

Location

Function: Anterior middle portion
Changes the shape of the lens, allowing it to focus

8. Iris of the eye Location:

Contains:

Function:: Anterior to the ciliary body in the middle layer of the eye

Contains the circular colored portion of the eye

Controls the amount of light to let into the pupil.
-Uses muscle fibers to contract or dilate based on environmental light.
9. Retina of the eye

Layer

Contents:

Function: Inner sensory layer

Photoreceptors-two types (rods and cones)

Rods- Stimulated in dark light. More sensitive to light but to not generate sharp or color
images.

Cones-Operate in bright light. Help generate sharp color images.

10. Lens Location: posterior to the iris and pupil
