Sociology can be defined as the scientific study of human society and social behaviour. It
focuses on how individuals interact within groups, how institutions such as family,
education, and religion function, and how social structures influence people’s lives and
opportunities. In simple terms, sociology helps us understand how society is organised and
why people behave the way they do within different social contexts (Giddens, 2013).
1.2 Describe education according to your understanding (2)
Education is a structured process through which knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes are
transmitted from one generation to another. It takes place in formal settings like schools, as
well as informal environments such as home and community. Education plays an important
role in social development by preparing individuals to participate effectively in society and
contribute to economic and social growth (Durkheim, 1956).

a) Assimilation (2)
Assimilation refers to the process where individuals or groups from different cultural
backgrounds gradually adopt the dominant culture of a society, often losing aspects of their
original culture. For example, a learner from a rural area who moves to an urban school
