Unit 2: Reproduction [Grade 9]

Reproduction
Introduction
Reproduction is forming new individuals and the continuation of living species.
There is asexual and sexual reproduction. Asexual = one organism, sexual = 2 organisms
Why is reproduction important?
- Avoids extinction
- Genetic diversity (derived from sexual reproduction)
- Continue existence
- Interaction

Human Reproductive System
Similarities
- Both reproductive systems have 2 pouches
- Testes and ovaries
- Both start inside the body
- Fetus begins with “starter parts” that could develop into either gender

XX = female
XY = male

The father determines the baby’s sex.

Male Female

- Function is sperm production - One egg is released once a month
- Produce sperm (from puberty until menopause)
- 2-4 million sperm every day - Careful coordination of hormones &
once puberty is hit body
- Create a perfect environment for
fertilized egg to develop

, Male Reproductive System

Sperm
- Hold very important genetic information (DNA) which is like blueprints to make a
baby
- Carry it from the male to the female
- Made up of 2 parts:
- Head (holds the nucleus - genetic info)
- Tail aka flagellum, acts like a propeller to help the sperm move towards the
egg
Testes
- Testis = 1, testes = 2
- Aka testicles
- Where sperm are produced/created, usually daily once puberty hits
- Sperm are specifically made in the seminiferous tubules, which are long coiled up
tubes inside the testes
- Cells in the testis produce a hormone called testosterone
- Responsible for secondary sexual characteristcs
- Voice deepens, facial hair, pubic hair, underam hair… etc.
- Testes create sperm, which are specifically created in the seminiferous tubes.
Cells in the testis produce testosterone which changes certain characteristics

Scrotum
- A sac of tissue that holds the testes
- Keeps the testes outside the body creating the cooler temperature needed to
produce healthy sperm

Epididymis
- Where mature sperm are stored until it leaves the body

Vas Deferens
- Sperm swim/travel through the tubes
- This tube also carries urine out of the body in males
- Last section of this tube is known as the urethra
- Both semen and urin exit the body here, but not at the same time
