Assignment 2 Semester 1 2026
Unique number:
Due Date: 9 April 2026
1. QUESTION 1: SELECTED USER GROUP AND DESCRIPTION

The selected user group is young unemployed youth in township communities in South
Africa. These are mainly individuals between the ages of 18 and 35 who live in areas such
as Khayelitsha, Soweto, and Umlazi. Many of them have completed school, while some
have basic tertiary qualifications, but they struggle to find stable employment. Most rely on
informal work, short term jobs, or family support. Access to resources is often limited,
especially in terms of stable internet, devices, and structured information services.

This group is important because youth unemployment in South Africa remains very high.
Many young people are actively looking for opportunities but do not have the right
information or support systems to guide them. Their situation affects not only their own lives
but also the broader economy and community development (Stats SA, 2023).

The main information needs of this group include job opportunities, skills development
programmes, funding options, and small business support. They also need guidance on how
to apply for jobs, prepare CVs, and access government services. However, they often
struggle to find reliable and updated information. Terms of use

INTRODUCTION

Access to information plays an important role in improving people’s daily lives,
especially in communities that face social and economic challenges. Many groups
still struggle to find reliable information due to limited digital access, low literacy
levels, and lack of relevant services. Digital technologies have created new ways for
people to search, share and use information, but not all communities benefit equally
from these developments.

This assignment focuses on understanding how a specific community searches for
information, the problems they experience, and how digital tools can support them. It
looks at their information needs, behaviour, and existing services, and then proposes
a suitable digital solution. By studying real user experiences, it becomes easier to
design systems that are practical and relevant. The aim is to show how information
services can be improved to better support communities and reduce barriers to
access (Case, 2012; Wilson, 1999).
