Woodwind and Brass
The development of woodwind and brass instruments played a crucial role in shaping
the symphonic genre between 1750 and 1900. Initially limited in both technical
capability and function, these instruments gradually gained independence, flexibility,
and expressive significance. Influenced by early innovations at the Mannheim court,
composers increasingly exploited woodwind and brass for colour, contrast, and
thematic development, contributing to the expansion of the symphony from a relatively
simple Classical form into a highly expressive Romantic genre.

The Mannheim orchestra was central to this development, particularly through the work
of Johann Stamitz in his Symphony in D major, Op.3 No.2. Stamitz helped standardise
the use of paired woodwind instruments (oboes and flutes), allowing for greater timbral
contrast and independence from the strings. Rather than simply doubling string lines,
woodwinds began to contribute distinctive colours and occasional melodic ideas.
Brass instruments, particularly horns, were used to reinforce harmonic structure and
add brilliance, often through the use of natural harmonics due to the limitations of
valveless instruments. Techniques such as hand-stopping (altering pitch and timbre by
placing the hand in the bell of the horn) began to expand the expressive possibilities of
brass playing. The precision of the Mannheim orchestra enabled effects such as the
Mannheim crescendo, in which brass and woodwind contributed to a unified and
dramatic increase in volume. These innovations laid the foundation for the increased
importance of wind and brass sections within the orchestra. These developments are
reflected in the broader stylistic trends of the mid-eighteenth century, including in the
works of C.P.E. Bach. In his Symphony in E minor, woodwinds are used to enhance the
emotional intensity characteristic of the Empfindsamer Stil, often providing contrasting
timbres and expressive dialogue with the strings. The writing demonstrates greater
idiomatic use of woodwind instruments, exploiting their unique tone colours rather
than treating them as secondary to the strings. Brass instruments remain more limited
but contribute to harmonic emphasis and structural clarity. This illustrates the growing
role of wind and brass in shaping orchestral texture and expression.

The Classical symphony marks a significant stage in the development of woodwind and
brass writing, particularly in the works of Haydn. In Symphony No.31 (“Hornsignal”),
Haydn gives an unusually prominent role to the horn section after the esterhazy
orchestra gained additional new ones and wanted to show them off, exploiting their
ability to play fanfare-like figures based on the harmonic series. This reflects both the
capabilities of natural horns and the increasing importance of brass in orchestral
colour. In Symphony No.88, Haydn demonstrates a more mature use of woodwinds,
with instruments such as oboes and bassoons contributing independent lines and
engaging in dialogue with the strings. The woodwinds are used idiomatically, often
