,Class 2: Professional Identity: Who are we and what do we
do?
A physician. Dr. Grandy, approaches you on your 1st long-
term affiliation in a hospital and asks you to apply a particular
modality to his patient. You tell him that you could do that
but that you would require a formal referral to PT and then
you would perform a comprehensive PT evaluation and
determine the nature and course of treatment. He asks you
why do you need to evaluate patients, he states, "I do that
and then tell you what to do". You tell him that as a Doctor of
PT that you are professionally obligated to perform a
thorough evaluation, provide a PT diagnosis and develop an
appropriate treatment plan. His response is, "Why are you
training to become a Doctor?? I am the Doctor, I supply the
diagnosis, and the tell you the treatment plan." - Answer: You
are working in a large acute care hospital. Your current
rotation is the evaluation and treatment of patients with
acute neurological impairments. While reading a patient chart
in the nurse's station, an older, veteran nurse observes the
, DPT appellation on your name tag. Curious she asks you if you
are a physician. You of course respond that you are a Doctor
of Physical Therapy. With a quizzical look, she responds ... "a
doctor of what?? I never heard of such a thing. Why is a
physical therapist considered a doctor? I don't understand?"
To your horror, her comments are overheard by three other
nurses and two physicians. They turn to you from curiosity to
listen to your response.
1. Based on the scenarios presented, you will provide the
physician and nurse cogent and convincing responses to their
question by doing the following:

do just fine. Together, write a reply to the questions raised by
Dr. Grandy and the nurse - why are you as a physical therapist
being trained as a Doctor? Take about 10 minutes. - Answer:
