Assignment 5 Semester 1 2026
Unique number: 276397
Due Date: 16 May 2026
1. Social Problems and Crime in My Community
In my community, one of the biggest problems is unemployment. Many young people do not
have jobs and struggle to meet their basic needs. This leads some of them to turn to crime
such as theft and drug dealing in order to survive. Poverty is also a serious issue. Families
often lack food, proper housing and support, which creates stress and frustration.
Substance abuse is another major problem. Many young people use drugs such as nyaope
and alcohol. This affects their thinking and behaviour. When they are under the influence,
they may commit crimes such as robbery or violence.
There is also a lack of positive role models and safe spaces for youth. Without guidance,
many young people are easily influenced by peer pressure. These social problems create an
environment where crime becomes common and, in some cases, seen as a normal way to
cope with challenges.

2. Corruption and Criminal Behaviour
Corruption plays a big role in increasing crime in my community. When officials do
not follow the law and accept bribes, it weakens trust in the system. People begin to
feel that rules do not matter and that crime can go unpunished.
For example, some individuals may pay bribes to avoid arrest or escape punishment.
This allows criminals to continue their activities without fear. It also encourages
others to do the same because they see that there are no real consequences.
Corruption also affects service delivery. When resources are misused, communities
do not receive proper support such as housing, jobs or social services. This
increases poverty and frustration, which can lead to criminal behaviour.
When people lose trust in authorities, they may take matters into their own hands.
This can lead to violence and further crime. Corruption therefore creates a cycle
where crime continues to grow in the community.
