Aspirin - chewable or enteric coated
- Decrease platelet aggregation
Rapid acting, Can be used for coverage
Aspart (Novolog)
- give 10-15 minutes before eating
Lispo (Humalog)
- short acting insulin to lower blood sugar, can be mixed with NPH
-Used for blood sugar coverage
- IV drip monitored by the RN
Novolin R or regular insulin - Only insulin IV
- Peak is 2-3 hours
Long-acting insulin
-peak less
Glargine (Lantus) -given once a day
- mimics the action of the pancreas.
intermediate acting
-cloudy
NPH -which can be mixed with regular insulin
- Use Humulin R or Humalog or Novolog
For sliding scale
- Can administer SUBQ
- No IV insulin push
LPN scope of practice with insulin - No Iv insulin Drip

- Offer backrub if appropriate, no back or kidney surgeries
