What is equality?

 Equality is ensuring individuals are treated fairly and equally and no less favourably or
disadvantaged.
 Care should therefore be specific to their needs, including areas of race ,gender, region or
belief ,sexual orientation and age.
 Promoting equality should remove discriminmation in all of the aformentioned areas
ensuring conclusion.


Types of discrimination include:

 Labelling or name calling
 Emotional abuse
 Physical assault
 Avoidance
 Mimicking
 Exclusion from an activity
 Graffiti targeted
 Denying access
 Victimisation and harassment


Why is equality essential in health and social care?

 In health and social care ,you often deal with people from different backgrounds and with
different beliefs ,and it is important that everyone is treated equally and fairly.

The effects of discrimination:

 Long term –

 isolation
 low self worth
 depressing
 aggression/crime
 suicide
 avoiding health care.
 Self loathing

 Short term –

 Embarrassment
 Offence
 Acceptance
 Withdrawal
 Upset
 Anger
 Intimidation
