Tonsils
The tonsils are a pair of so ssue masses located at
the rear of the throat. Each tonsil is composed of
ssue like lymph nodes. The main func on of tonsils
is to trap germs (bacteria and viruses) which may be
inhaled. Proteins called an bodies which are
produced by immune cells in the tonsils help to kill
germs and help to prevent throat and lung infec ons.
Tonsils have specialised an gen capture cells on their

surface that allow for the absorp on of pathogens
produced by an gens. The specialised an gen cells then alert the underlying B-cells and T-
cells in the tonsil that a foreign body/pathogen is
present, and an immune response is s mulated.
Thymus gland
Located in the upper chest, this gland's primary func on
is to promote the development of cells of the immune
system called T lymphocytes. T lymphocytes, or T-cells,
are white blood cells that protect against foreign
